I'm in the midst of repairing a K1000 for a friend, and what I was hoping was just stray light seal foam (HA!) is in fact desilvering on the prism... I was wondering what kind of experiences people have had with swapping in prisms from other Pentax's like the ME/ ME Super or the older Spotmatics, to which the K1000's are so closely related. I have a parts-only ME super I could dig into for a spare, but wanted to hear what others had to say before digging it out only to find out it did not fit the specs...

My experiences with K1000 desilvered prisms are many and sad. It seems such is an endemic issue with the K1000. There is no other Pentax model from which you could cannibalise a replacement. And if you occasion upon a junker K1000 it is just as likely you'll find the exact same desilvering. I am in Australia and we have a world-class optical lab in Tasmania to which I snd my K1000 prisms for resilvering. It costs around $35. Replacing the prism on a K1000 is a fairly straightforward job.
