I followed Rick Oleson’s instruction (which is a big help) on his web site to open the film gate of a Contax D. I notice while winding, the opening and closing curtain traveled together with no gap in between. However, when they reach the end point the opening curtain reversed a little and left a gap between the two curtains.
This gap was outside the film window so it won’t cause light leak on the film. Is this normal?
In Rick’s other note on how the shutter works where it mentions "As gear 2 rotates, it winds shutter via gear 3; once the shutter is fully wound, cutout section in gear 2 releases gear 3 which would then reverse except for pawls 15/16 which prevent rotation of shaft." Is this the cause of the gap? Can anyone comment? Thanks… |

I was happy that the camera was not jammed so I didn't have to open the top. Well, after some dry shoots, it all the sudden jammed. I cannot wind the shutter at all. Shutter speed was not changed during those shoots. Anyone knows why this happened? |

I can't help regarding the jamming - I'd try winding while pressing the shutter release or the rewind button, or turning the sprocket-spindle by hand, but obviously DON'T force it!
Regarding the gap between the curtains; it looks about right if the speed was set at 1/1000 sec. I've attached a shot of my Pentacon FM cocked at 1/1000.

Thanks for the information. When the camera still worked, the size of the gap did not change between different speeds.
The curtains on your Pantacon seem to be in very good condition. Have they been replaced? My camera with the old curtains still runs within 1/4 stop up to 1/500. Now, I need to fix the jammed shutter. I should have listened to the old saying: "If it didn't break, don't fix it". Sigh... |

Now I think about it, I'm fairly sure the gap will be the same at different speeds. It will just be the delay releasing the 2nd curtain that increases the gap at slower speeds. I don't think I ever quite figured out exactly how the thing worked!
The curtains on the FM are the originals, and do need replacing. The one you can see most of is the 1st curtain, of course, which as usual is not quite as bad as the 2nd. I managed to change curtains on a Pentacon F, so I'll get around to the FM one day.

Do you remember how many turns were you using when reloading the tension of the Pantacon F curtain? |

The tension that I start with on Pentacon curtains is about 7 turns, then tweak from there as needed. If you'd like to send me an email at [email protected], I'll be happy to send you the whole set of notes (it's a 26-page PDF file) |

OK, the jamming winding knob is fixed. Followed Rick's detail note to clear the jammed shutter and the knob was still jammed. So, I opened the top. After removing the winding knob assembly and moving the gears back and forth several times, a tiny screw failed off. Someone got to it before I did.
The camera is back to its working order. I am now waiting for the curtain material and will let everyone know how it works out. Thanks for everyone's help. |
