Hi everybody. Today I acquired a Yashica FX-D camera and it seemed pretty cool so I decided to get some film for it. I got it loaded up and tried to click the film advance lever. However, it was not budging, so i more or less forced it and it snapped right off.
Is there a way to repair this? I don't care if the repair looks good, I just want it to work

Same problem here. It's stuck on the initial position. Shutter doesnt fire. Opened the bottom case but everything seems to be fine... Does anyone knows how to fix this camera? |

Well its blunder to apply force on any camera. Having damaged it only altrenative is to repair the damage firt and then trouble shoot the original problem. You will need to open the bottom cover and I am sure you will find one of the holes at one the ends of the 2 levers have snapped off. The pictures in this page might be help ful assuming FD body has similar to FX.

I have come across a Cosina CT-1 similarly misused. The broken lever was repaired by a jeweller by brazing and restorning orinal shape. Fortualately it is as gooad as new afterwards. |

I hate to say this, but the camera won't fire without a battery and if it won't fire you can only wind it once.
Mechanically it's very similar to a Contax 139.

You can try resetting it by moving the obstruction lever "anti rewind claw" after removing the bottom of the camera. |

It also depends on just what "...snapped off". Was it just the lever breaking in two, or did part of the shaft give way? I've got a Minolta X-700 that someone tried to advance the winder when the battery had died, and it snapped the shaft inside the body. I plan on tearing it down for parts later on, as it was easier to just get another body they are so plentiful. That and the fact I only paid $3 for the broken one.

I've never opened a camera before, so I'm afraid of opening something beyond than the bottom plate. But here's my situation:
1 - Advance lever stuck on this position:

2 - Opening the bottom and softly pulling this metallic blue thing releases the advance lever:

3 - Mirror is stuck at this position:

Also it cracked when I've detached lens and forced it down:

Your shutter is in the released state Vctrrl.
The next step in the exposure sequence is for the mirror to drop down and reset the camera, moving the obstruction lever (blue thing) so that the camera can be wound. Something has stopped it at that point.
If winding the camera again and attempting to fire it does not work, there is likely something blocking the release process inside the camera. |

So should I "force" the camera to wind by moving the obstruction lever and try to fire it?
Assuming that's something blocking the release process, how can I fix it? Could you try to guide me thru this process? |

Well, you are not "forcing" it; you are "allowing" it. You have little to lose at this point by trying it. Try it and see what happens. The wind lever should not be forced if it meets abnormal resistance once the obstruction lever is moved out of the way. |

No abnormal resistance. Shutter still doesn't fire, even with the batteries. Light meter blinks two red lights. |

You seem to have a mechanical problem inside the camera. Major disassembly may be required.
A couple of the things which may be keeping the mirror from dropping:
Shutter too high. Three screws hold the shutter in place.
A problem with the mirror return levers, wind side of mirror box. |

camera is pretty nice, I don't want to destroy it, but would be cool to fix it properly. Mirror is broken, but I think I can leave it as it is for now. I just wanna try to restore it's normal shutter and advance functions. The outside leather is totally screwed, so I plan to by a replacement.
If fixing doesn't involve replace any internal component I wanna try it. If involves I wont, because I dont have proper pieces to replace. |

yes a very good logic. I you are serius abt fixing it yrself first try to understand how the mechanism works. I tis eaasy to find out wat went wrong and fix it. Though no tow camears are fully alike ther are always similarities but the sequece of operation, basic logic is same in all SLRs.
when you advance the film simultaneously you are
cocking shutter as well as the mirror mechanism.

the link you posted of Yashica disassembly it's pretty useful, but the steps aren't clear. Reach all the steps may be easier to someone that knows what to do, but I'm stuck wondering how to take off the dials and stuff.
I'm trying to get some knowledge from Camera Repair Book.
Also, Yashica FXD quartz seems to be a little different in the upper section:

So here we go.
You need to get the top off to start. The shutter release button is unscrewed with a small rubber stopper. If the rubber does not work, try a sharp tweezers and grip at the edges to unscrew. Any little marks can be sanded off later. The top of the wind lever also unscrews with a larger rubber stopper but it unscrews clockwise. It's a left hand thread. The small black metal ring around the remote shutter release connection on the back of the camera at the top under the wind lever is also unscrewed with a small rubber stopper.
The rest is obvious and easy.
When you get that done come back for the next step. If you go on without the next step here, you will be on your own. Patience is not a virtue; it's required. |

ok, I've managed to unscrew the shutter button with my thumb. Wind lever is really hard, the only thing that dettached is a metallic cover fixed with glue. About the ring, I don't know what to do. I guess the button should unscrew as the shutter releasing the ring.

The self timer button is the same of the shutter, but I'm not able to take it off and I'm afraid to force unscrew the ring because I think that the self timer button should work as the shutter button does.
Til' now I've just unscrewed the wind lever and the shutter button. The wind lever is covered by a little black metallic think fixed with glue. Under this cover there's two holes where I've placed a plier like this one http://media.digikey.com/photos/Cooper%20Industries%20Photos/2411P.JPG to unscrew it clockwise as you said.
So here I am:
- advance lever unscrewed
- shutter release button unscrewed
